View from Tuzigoot NM. Arizona is a mining state. Copper mining began in nearby Clarkdale and Jerome in the 1880's and produced billions in revenues. It also produced 4.5 million tons of tailings, covering 116 acres just below Tuzigoot. The tailings, which used to blow around in dust storms, were finally capped and revegetated 2006. The field on the right hand side of the picture is a rehabilitated tailings deposit from an old copper smelter.
